Madrid - an introduction to its history and paintings

Once a small Moorish stronghold, Madrid was officially appointed the capital city of Spain in 1561 by Philip II, and it expanded rapidly into the vibrant and exciting city it is today.  Its Habsburg and Bourbon palaces, old and new, its plazas, its churches, its neo-classical architecture, and vistas all reflect its history. The many museums – the Prado, Thyssen Collection, the Royal Academy of San Fernando, the Reina Sofia Collection and the Sorolla Museum to name a few - show the patronage of royal and aristocratic families and the personalities of many Madrileños
