Once a small Moorish stronghold, Madrid was officially appointed the capital city of Spain in 1561 by Philip II, and it expanded rapidly into the vibrant and exciting city it is today.  Its Habsburg and Bourbon palaces, old and new, its plazas, its churches, its neo-classical architecture, and vistas all reflect its history.
