The Monastery Palace of El Escorial

Philip II’s vast granite palace not far from Madrid was intended to be “a dwelling for God on Earth”. It is a palace, a monastery with a great church, and the royal mausoleum of the Spanish Habsburgs and Bourbons. The lecture looks at aspects of the palace and the artists, craftsmen and personalities who made their mark on it.
