The Spanish Habsburgs -  Art and history 1469-1700

The Habsburg connection began when Ferdinand and Isabella, Spain’s 15th century “Catholic monarchs”, arranged the marriages of their son and a daughter to the children of the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian. Their grandson, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and his son, grandson, great grandson, and great, great grandson preserved this direct link until 1700.  Cousinly marriages strengthened the bonds, and patronage of the arts, with artists like Titian and Velázquez painting for the royal family, emphasised the glories of Habsburg rule.
